Door County Part 2

On Monday, Mike and I decided we'd go for a hike.  When we arrived at Peninsula State Park, suited up in a billion layers to keep warm, we decided we'd really go for it.  There was a lookout tower four miles away.  A connection of hiking trails could take us all the way.  We were feeling quite ambitious, so we just did it.

The whole purpose of my week off and for this trip was to slow down, clear my mind, and refresh.  I got what I was asking for with the hike.  It was a true adventure.  Along the way, we encountered different "chapters": a grove of pines with such stillness it was almost eery, an explosion of yellow leaves hanging in a canopy above us, cliffs overlooking the depths below -- amazing.

Reaching the lookout tower at the end felt like a real accomplishment!

Trudging through the leaves on the way back, we indulged in great conversation.  We felt so alone in such a big place, and it was unimaginably cozy.  It's a pretty exciting thing to be married to your best friend.

Exhausted from our eight mile excursion, we spent the evening holed up in our room at the Blacksmith, drinking wine, ordering carryout cheese curds from the corner pub, and playing board games.  My calves are STILL killing me!

Leaving yesterday felt a bit like waking up for work Monday morning!  We knew the end would come, but we SO appreciated our time together in that great B&B.  I hope to return to the Blacksmith again soon!

Door County Fall Adventure

The time has finally come!  Mike's family gave us a gift certificate for a bed and breakfast in Door County, Wisconsin as a wedding gift.  We held onto it and decided to save it for a fall getaway, after all of the wedding fuss was over and we needed a break.  Boy, am I glad we waited!  The foliage is absolutely brilliant now, the colors brighter than imaginable.

The bed and breakfast we are staying at is absolutely perfect.  It's called the Blacksmith Inn on the Shore.  The photos online showed a sweet little B&B with distinctive and cozy rooms set on the shore of a little sound.  Little did we know that we would be stepping into a little slice of heaven when we arrived.  After getting "the tour" we were left to our own devices.  We flipped on the fireplace, turned down the covers, and dozed off for a mid-afternoon nap.  Waking up to a picture window view of the sunset over the water was an added bonus.

I'm so excited to be here and can't wait to just take it slow and soak it all in!

My packing for this trip involved lots of layers.  With weather in the 40s, I wanted to stay warm but not completely bundled!  I stuck to a palette of outdoorsy neutrals: plaid, denim, more denim, olive, etc.  I hate pre-packing specific outfits for the same reason that I never lay out my outfits the night before.  I never feel like wearing what I originally picked out.  I like having lots of options!

Well, we just returned from having a glass of wine out on the dock and are deciding on dinner options.  Enjoying every moment of this.
